10 Washing Machine Maintenance Tips to Extend Its Lifespan

Flash TeamDecember 28, 20244 min read

Your washing machine works hard, handling countless loads of laundry each year. With proper care and maintenance, you can keep it running efficiently for 10 years or more. Here are our top tips from the engineers at Flash Team.

1. Don't Overload the Drum

One of the most common causes of washing machine problems is overloading. When you cram too many clothes in:

  • The drum struggles to spin properly
  • Clothes don't get cleaned effectively
  • Extra strain is put on the motor and bearings
  • The machine becomes unbalanced during spin cycles

Tip: Leave about a hand's width of space between the top of the clothes and the drum.

2. Use the Right Amount of Detergent

More detergent doesn't mean cleaner clothes. In fact, too much detergent causes:

  • Residue buildup inside the machine
  • Unpleasant odours
  • Damage to seals and gaskets
  • Poor rinsing

Tip: Follow the dosage instructions on your detergent and consider using even less for lightly soiled loads.

3. Clean the Detergent Drawer Regularly

The detergent drawer is a breeding ground for mould and bacteria. Remove it monthly and:

  • Soak in warm soapy water
  • Scrub with an old toothbrush
  • Rinse thoroughly before replacing

4. Run a Hot Wash Monthly

Modern machines often run on low temperatures, which is great for energy savings but can lead to odour-causing bacteria. Once a month, run an empty hot wash (60°C or higher) with a washing machine cleaner or cup of white vinegar.

5. Wipe Down the Door Seal

The rubber door seal traps moisture, lint, and debris. After each wash:

  • Wipe the seal with a dry cloth
  • Check for trapped items
  • Leave the door ajar to allow air circulation

6. Check and Clean the Filter

Most front-loading machines have a filter that catches coins, hair clips, and debris. Check it every few months:

  1. Place a towel and shallow dish under the filter
  2. Turn the filter cap slowly to drain water
  3. Remove any debris
  4. Clean and replace the filter

7. Level Your Machine

An unlevel washing machine vibrates excessively, causing:

  • Excessive noise
  • Damage to internal components
  • Movement during spin cycles

Tip: Use a spirit level to check and adjust the feet until the machine is perfectly level.

8. Don't Leave Wet Clothes in the Drum

Leaving wet clothes sitting in the drum promotes mould growth and unpleasant smells. Remove clothes promptly after the cycle ends.

9. Inspect Hoses Annually

The inlet hoses that supply water to your machine can deteriorate over time:

  • Check for cracks, bulges, or signs of wear
  • Ensure connections are tight
  • Consider replacing hoses every 5 years

10. Keep the Machine Clean Outside Too

Dust and grime can build up on the exterior and control panel. Wipe down regularly with a damp cloth to keep your machine looking and functioning its best.

When to Call a Professional

While regular maintenance helps prevent many issues, some problems require professional attention:

  • Strange noises during operation
  • Water leaking from the machine
  • Drum not spinning
  • Error codes appearing
  • Burning smells

Summary

Taking care of your washing machine doesn't require much effort, but it pays off in the long run. A few minutes of maintenance each month can save you hundreds on repairs and extend your machine's lifespan significantly.
