Tools You'll Need
- Towel or shallow dish
- Old toothbrush
- Clean cloth
A clogged washing machine filter is one of the most common causes of drainage problems, bad odours, and poor wash performance. The good news? Cleaning it yourself takes just 15 minutes and can save you a repair callout.
Where Is the Filter?
Most front-loading washing machines have a filter (also called a pump filter or drain filter) located at the bottom front of the machine, usually behind a small panel or flap.
Common locations by brand:
- Bosch/Siemens: Bottom right, behind a round panel
- Samsung/LG: Bottom left or right, behind a rectangular panel
- Hotpoint/Indesit: Bottom right, behind a kick plate
Before You Start
Always turn off and unplug your washing machine before accessing the filter. There will be water spillage, so have towels ready.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare for Water
Place a shallow dish or towel beneath the filter access panel. When you open the filter, water will drain out – sometimes quite a lot if the machine hasn't been draining properly.
Step 2: Open the Access Panel
Locate the small door or panel at the bottom front of your machine. It usually clips open or has a small catch you can press.
Step 3: Drain Residual Water
Many machines have a small drain hose next to the filter. Pull this out and let water drain into your dish. If there's no drain hose, the water will come out when you remove the filter – slowly unscrew to control the flow.
Step 4: Remove the Filter
Twist the filter anticlockwise to unscrew it. Pull it straight out once loose.
Step 5: Clean the Filter
Remove any debris – you'll often find coins, hair clips, tissues, and lint. Rinse the filter under running water and use an old toothbrush to remove stubborn buildup.
Check inside the filter housing too! Shine a torch in and remove any debris caught in the pump impeller (the propeller-like part at the back).
Step 6: Replace the Filter
Screw the filter back in clockwise until hand-tight. Make sure it's secure to prevent leaks.
Step 7: Close and Test
Replace the access panel and run a quick rinse cycle to check for leaks.
How Often Should You Clean It?
We recommend cleaning your washing machine filter every 1-3 months, or more frequently if you:
- Wash items with lots of lint (towels, blankets)
- Have pets that shed
- Notice your machine draining slowly
Signs Your Filter Needs Cleaning
- Machine not draining or spinning
- Bad smells from the drum
- Error codes (E21, F5, etc.)
- Water remaining after a cycle
- Visible debris in the drum
When to Call an Engineer
